JANUARY APPLICATION UPDATES 1月申请事宜更新

Dear Parent 尊敬的家长们,

I am pleased to say that most of our seniors have applied to University, and I am sure that they have started to feel less stressed and more focused on their coursework. As we are moving through the month and into February, here are some things to keep in mind:

January 15th is another more significant application deadline for the US. I will be sending the documents required for this during the week leading up to the 15th.

Students need to check their emails for application portals and application results regularly.
学生需要时时、定期地检查他们的邮件、院校申请平台，跟踪申请进程和申请结果。
If students receive university emails stating they are missing any work, they need to read through carefully. They are more than welcome to ask me or Ms. Shanshan (for the UK only) if they have any questions about what the University wants.

Students may begin to receive emails asking for midyear transcripts. I will send those to the universities that require them the week of February 21st. Universities understand that schools have different calendars and need time to process the transcripts. If a school reaches out, the student can inform them when the official documents will be sent out.

学生可能会逐渐开始收到院校邮件，要求发送中期成绩单。2月21日开始的那一周，我会向有所要求的院校发送中期成绩单。不同中学有不同的课程时间进展，并需要一定的时间生成成绩单，大学院校对此都了解和理解。如果大学院校发送了中期成绩单要求，学生可以告知对方我校官方成绩单提交的时间。

Students will receive an unofficial copy of those transcripts. They can use that transcript for schools that ask students to self-report their grades.

If students receive admissions results, they need to report them to me, regardless of their answer.

如学生有收到录取结果，无论是录取还是拒信，都要告知我。

If students received a scholarship, I kindly ask that they report that as well to track how much was received and which schools are offering scholarships.

G11 PARENTS AND STUDENTS: PASSPORT RENEWAL 护照更新

Dear XXX and Parent,

亲爱的XXX及家长，

As you are starting to prepare for applications, it is important to have official legal documents up to date. Most Countries/locations issuing visas require at least 6 months of validity upon the date of application. For students interested in the UK, they need at least 1 year of validity. Our files indicate that your passport has or will expire on month, day, year.

由于我们已经进入大学申请准备阶段，我们需要保证在该阶段内，所有的相关证件文件都在有效期内。大多数国家/地区在签发签证时，需要保证护照至少还有6个月的有效期。有意向申请英国院校的学生，护照有效期不得少于1年。我们在档的学生档案显示，你的护照已经或即将于xx年xx月xx日（YY/MM/DD）过期。

In order for students to be successful, please check your passports. If your passport has expired or will expire before July of 2024, please consider updating your passport. If your passport has been recently updated, please email admission@i-s-d.orgwith a copy of your passport so that we can update our files.

INTRODUCTION TO STEM COMPETITIONS

Dear Parents

ISD is now giving the opportunity to Secondary students with numerous influential and professional world-renowned competitions of different subjects from the US, UK, Canada, Australia and the others, it is the aims to enrich the STEM learning for students across different grades by offering them the access to the most advanced scientific education resources.

今年ISD 有幸提给中学部学生提供来自美国、英国、加拿大、澳大利亚和其他地区的不同学科的众多有影响力和专业的世界知名比赛给在校生，目的是为了提供给中学部不同年级的学生丰富 STEM 学习获得最先进的科学教育资源。

STEM for what？

STEM是什么？

The concept of STEM education appeared in the United States as early as the 1990s. It is hoped that through STEM education, it can cultivate scientific and technological talents, improve the scientific literacy of the people, and maintain the leading edge of technology and economy in the world. STEM education is the abbreviation of the four categories of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. STEM is different from traditional subjects. It focuses on interdisciplinary knowledge, and especially focuses on training students' logical thinking, problem-solving skills, application of innovative skills, collaboration skills, creativity and other abilities, so that students can cope with the rapid development of the future society and the world. Changes and challenges brought about by economic, scientific and technological development.

STEM教育的理念早于二十世纪九十年代于美国出现，希望借着STEM教育培育科技人才，提升国民的科学素养，并维持科技及经济在全球领先的优势。 STEM教育即是科学（science）、科技（technology）、工程（engineering）及数学（mathematics）四个范畴的缩写。 STEM有别于传统的科目，重于跨学科知识外、特别着重培训学生的逻辑思维、解难能力、创新技能的应用、协作能力、创意力等能力，令学生能应对未来社会及全球因急速的经济、科学及科技发展所带来的转变和挑战。

As the application number is increasing every year, however there is only limited positions that each university can provide, therefore the student with outstanding academic achievement is the mandatory requirement, to make the student stands out from thousands of applications, students who have high STEM competition outcomes will give them a better chance to show their abilities and also help students stand out from the crowd of applicants.

面对海外大学申请人数倍增，名校录取名额有限的情况，紧靠过硬的标化成绩就能申得名校的时代已经过去了，标化成绩已不是唯一。所以，够硬核的课外学术活动才是最关键。而具有高含金量的国际竞赛活动和研究项目在很大程度上可以帮助同学们从一众申请者中脱颖而出。

SAT Plans for the Remainder of the Year

Dear Students & Parents:

Unfortunately, the June 6, 2020 test administration has been cancelled and I anticipate ACT will make a similar announcement soon. If it is safe, SAT will allow us to administer tests beginning in August and registration will begin in May. Please note that currently, ISD is not set to administer the SAT in August 2020, however I will reach out to ETS (the testing agency) to see if it is possible to include this date for our Test Center. I appreciate your patience with this matter, as we are working hard to navigate the everchanging news related to university admissions and testing due to COVID-19.

While SAT/ACTs are commonly required at US institutions, over the last few years there has been a trend: becoming test-optional or flexible. Attached you will find a spreadsheet with US institutions who are test-optional or flexible. A Google Doc version can be found here and is updated regularly, but please use this as a guide and double check all information on official websites of universities.

As the College Board responds to the impact of coronavirus, our top priorities are the health and safety of students and educators. We’re working hard to make the SAT available in school and out of school as soon as the public health situation allows. Right now, public health officials have made clear it is not safe to gather students in one place. Many states have closed school for the rest of the academic year, and globally there are widespread school closures across 192 countries. As such, we will not be able to administer the SAT and SAT Subject Tests as planned on June 6, 2020. Students will have opportunities to take the SAT to make up for this spring’s lost administrations. If it’s safe from a public health standpoint, we will provide weekend SAT administrations every month through the end of the calendar year, beginning in August. This includes a new administration in September and the previously scheduled tests on August 29, October 3, November 7, and December 5. Students will be able to register for these administrations beginning in May. We’ll communicate directly with students when the exact date is available. Eligible students will be able to take the exam with a fee waiver. Students who were registered for June and those in the high school class of 2021 who do not have SAT scores will have early access to registration for the August, September, and October administrations. Due to the administration cancellations this spring, we expect there will be a high demand for the SAT administrations later this year. We’re calling on our member schools and colleges, as well as local communities, to open their doors and provide additional test center capacity so every student who wants to can take the SAT.

If you are not a test center for the summer and fall administrations, and you would like to open to provide testing opportunities for students, please let Test Administration Services know as soon as possible.
If you are an SSD coordinator administering school-based testing, please update your SSD school testing calendar (available in May from SSD Online) to reflect any changes in availability.
